During the time of Westward Expansion, the pioneers traveling
to the frontier faced many hardships on their journey. Jack London, a popular turn of the twentieth century author, wrote about many facets of frontier life, including the treacherous Oregon Trail, everyday life on
the frontier, and the obstacles that settlers faced daily. Pioneers traveled 2,000 miles in covered wagons with their families, mules, and supplies in search of a better life. Pioneers had to constantly work in harsh conditions just to stay alive and support their families. Life as a pioneer was rough, but many chose this new life willingly, including many African Americans who went west in search of freedom. Thousands of people set out in search of a better life for themselves and their families, but many failed to reach the frontier due to death
along the way, caused by disease, accidents, or natural causes. Living on the frontier was full of hardships, but brought many pioneers new opportunities they did not have in the East.
