Living as a pioneer on America's western frontier was not an easy life, but many chose it. Over the course
of the nineteenth century, thousands of Americans made the difficult journey west, and established their lives on the frontier. Pioneer life was full of hard work, sacrifice, and struggle, but the bold men and women settling the land were determined to overcome the adversities they faced.

Many people believe the American West consisted of white settlers and Native Americans, but this is not entirely true. Many African Americans traveled west, in search for new freedoms and opportunities on the frontier. African American pioneers were cowboys, schoolteachers, farmers, cavalrymen, and even outlaws. However, even the freedom of the west did not stop African American settlers from facing discrimination.
